Warner Music Signs an Algorithm

Logo for Endel, the new artificial intelligence software

Recently, it has come to light that Warner Music has signed an algorithm, called Endel, to their record label. Consequence of sound has provided an article that links sample songs from the artificial intelligence platform.

To many, including myself, this is worrying. With the development of music algorithms, and now with one being signed, it is possible in the near future record labels will switch to using apps and artificial intelligence as opposed to signing artists and songwriters.

This concept is so hard to believe because music is generally loved due to people feeling emotional connections to artists and the music they put out. Music isn’t just about sound, It’s about experience of which includes important face to face components such as concerts. It seems as though an artificial intelligence platform could never be as artistically intuitive as a human being. While a person can bring new sounds or new music into fold, an algorithm is simply mimicking sounds programmers are able to feed into an app.

After listening to songs from the app and learning more about the record deal, It is more clear the Warner is introducing the device as songs to fall asleep to or to listen to as background music rather than true solid albums. For now, using apps to make legitimate music is too far forward to worry about. However, it is something to be wary of and not disregard as illegitimate. I feel as though if software similar to this is first introduced as background music and not trying to be a consumers favorite artist, they will be more likely to adapt the idea. I still think it is far in the future till music listeners consider artificial intelligence a legitimate music medium. However, this is not to say it will never happen. The fact one of the biggest record labels in the world jumped ahead to sign one should say enough about its credibility in the future.
